Stylish simplicity, shoes and handbags

Tuesday, 25 March 2008

My husband has a favourite saying - always think 'style over fashion', rather than 'fashion over style' and, wait for it, he's right! Think of the items of clothing in your wardrobe that you love and get the most compliments about... I bet they're classic rather than uber-trendy and it's a lesson that will serve you well when you're planning your wedding.

By all means look at the latest trends for dresses, colours and venue decoration but remember that you'll have to look at photographs of your day for the rest of your life and you know how fickle fashion is! Remember to think classic, think simple and you're more likely to get stylish and not 'fashion victim'.

This week I've been having a lot of fun helping a lovely couple to plan a beautifully simple wedding for later this year. Simple most definitely doesn't mean easy though - there are still over 100 decisions and 200+ hours of planning to do! In fact, it's a bigger challenge - one we relish at Magic Dust - to plan 'simplicity' but the rewards are fantastic. A display of ivory pillar candles of different heights arranged in an old fireplace, single stems of a stunning flower in groups of 3 or 5 vases, napkins folded simply but unusually - again, it's the little things that make the biggest impression. Less is most definitely more and the pared down beauty of simplicity is breathtaking.

And whilst we're talking style, let's mention shoes and handbags - the things that make supermodels of us all! If you want to treat yourself to something that you'll wear or use long after you've said your vows then think outside of the bridal wear box when you're thinking about your feet and where to keep your lipstick on your wedding day. Check out the 2 clutch bags on p180/1 of this month's Vogue and see what I mean - there's no way either of those bags will end up in a box under the spare bed! For similar beauties on the High Street, head for Accessorize or Zara. Just make sure you've made 'handbag' one of your priorities on your Magic Dust Wedding Planner so there'll be no arguments and you'll have a lovely reminder of your day, every day!

If you'd like us to help you plan a simple, stylish wedding, if you'd like us to ensure everything runs smoothly on the day itself and the weeks before with our 'On The Day Co-ordination' service, or even if you just want an answer to a question that's been bugging you for weeks, please contact me - I'd love to hear from you!

Until next week,
