Think about the celebration you are planning and how your bridesmaids outfits will fit in with that. If you’re going for a relaxed feel, an eclectic mix of bridesmaid dresses, perhaps tied together by everyone wearing the same shoes, will look great.
There’s nothing wrong with asking your bridesmaids to wear a dress they already own to keep costs down. Chances are they’ll feel more comfortable in something they chose themselves anyway!
