Wedding venue decoration fun and a very helpful photographer

Sunday, 29 March 2009

This week culminated in a very early morning train journey - 6am - in to London yesterday to oversee 5 hours of venue decoration or, as I prefer to call it, venue transformation!

Thanks to an incredibly organised bride and a fabulous team of helpers, the task was made much easier than it otherwise would have been. Nevertheless, the time plan I had produced, complete with details of tasks, time required and persons responsible, became our blueprint for a successful morning.

There was no panic, nobody got flustered and I could smile knowing that the bride was going to be absolutely delighted when she walked in and saw her vision brought to life, and sunshine streaming through the windows!

If you're a regular reader of this blog you'll know how excited we get when we come across suppliers in the wedding industry who share magicdust's ethos of putting the couple getting married first, and who want to challenge the traditional - and in some cases, deserved - perception of the wedding industry as nothing short of money-grabbing.

So, I was delighted to be approached by a Bath-based photographer who has taken the time to address the frustration of many married couples who are disappointed when they get their wedding photos back.

Paul Roland Williams has written an ebook called '5 Questions You Must Ask Your Wedding Photographer' which is not only very readable but extremely useful. I'd suggest making yourself a cup of tea and putting aside 15 minutes to read it as it is full of useful information from an experienced photographer who has taken the time to try and help couples getting married.

There's no sales pitch, no need to fill in any details, just the opportunity to arm yourself with the information you need to make an informed decision about choosing your wedding photographer.

As I haven't worked with him I can't personally recommend Paul Roland Williams, but nonetheless I can and do applaud his refreshing approach.

And if you are interested in working with him, take his own advice and ask him for references you can talk to - it wouldn't surprise me if he hasn't got lots of satisfied couples queuing up to tell other people about his work! I wish him all the very best and hope that we get to work together soon, I have a feeling we'd get on famously.

If you'd like to see if we're free on your wedding date to be your 'On The Day' wedding co-ordinator so you too can relax and enjoy every second of your day and the run-up to it, or you would like to book a Girls Night In wedding planning session, or you simply have a wedding planning question that's keeping you awake at night, please get in touch - we're here to help!

Until next week,

Flowers & freebies

Saturday, 21 March 2009

Hasn't the sunshine been just fabulous this week? I like to think that it was ordered especially for my birthday but that's just me!

There's something really special about this time of year, the appearance of thousands of daffodils on the roadside, lambs in the fields and, if you're anything like me, an almost uncontrollable desire to get out my flip flops and freeze my feet off at the first sight of a blue sky.

So, flowers have definitely been on my mind and I wanted to tell you about an unusual combination I've come across that really works. The simplicity and softness of spring flowers like hyacinth and tulips in pinks and lilacs teamed with something stronger like thistles, in a complementary shade of purple, looks spectacular and a little bit different (the ones shown on the right are from InterFlora). It's perfect for table centrepieces and especially so if you're trying to incorporate a nod to your Scottish heritage - that's how we've used it for a client this week.

One of my favourite sources of inspiration is the fabulous Amanda's Vintage Glam Weddings blog and this week she has given all you handy brides a real treat.

Four beautiful flower patterns to download and use as you see fit for your weddings - invitations, place name cards, orders of service, table plan. There are endless ways in which you can incorporate them, either yourself or with the help of a designer. I hope you like them.

Here's to a sunny weekend, particularly for Lisa & Jonathan - have a wonderful day and don't worry about a thing (that's our job!).

Inspired by a single colour, and the great British public

Saturday, 14 March 2009

It's been a busy week - and one of my favourites - as we caught up with a number of our Spring brides for their pre-wedding 'On The Day' co-ordination meetings.

I never fail to be inspired by the amount of thought, preparation, care and attention that is put into every single wedding celebration and I love the opportunity magicdust gets to ensure everything happens as and when it should, with the minimum of fuss and maximum impact.

You might think my inspiration bank would have been full to the brim by the end of the week but, no, there was still room to relax, enjoy and cry at last night's Comic Relief. I can't think why, but I've been drawn to the colour red this morning - even a single accent of this passionate colour, as shown in this Prima Donna Bride inspiration board, will add huge impact.

Have a look at some great uses of red at weddings over at theknot.com that I hope will inspire you if you're looking for a strong statement for your wedding celebration.

And finally, here's the link to Comic Relief's website where you really can make a difference no matter how much or how little you can afford to give. £56 million raised and still counting, in the middle of a recession - doesn't that make you proud to be British?

Introducing our new guest blogger, Cathrin D'Entremont

Saturday, 7 March 2009

We come across lots of people involved in weddings, and occasionally find someone that we think shares our "refreshing, simple and invaluable" ethos - Cathrin D'Entremont may work on the other side of the world - she's based in Perth, Western Australia - but her tips and advice will be no less valuable to you.

Here's the first of her monthly blogs, and you can find more of her wedding planning inspiration on her website... Over to you, Cathrin!

- What inspires you? How do you keep your ideas fresh for each wedding?

Blogs! I am a blog addict. I visit Polka Dot Bride every day! I love looking at wedding photos, interior decorating books, landscaping books and I shop a lot. Window shopping mostly, as I am not a very rich person! When I shop I create for my clients. It works for me!

- What is your number one tip for brides?

Create a budget and stick to it! Don’t do another cookie cutter wedding. Incorporate your personality; do not be afraid to have some great entertainment at your reception.

- What should brides start with when they come to you to start the planning process?

Cuttings from magazines or printing from the computer all the photos they love and would like to see at their wedding, no matter how wild or far fetched they are. I like to get their vision into my head so I can then find everything they need. It starts out as a huge collage which will turn into their perfect wedding.

- Five things a bride must get right?

1. Set a budget and stick to it

2. Balance the budget - don’t spend most of the money on your dress, leave some for the reception

3. Get organized and keep a ring binder with tags. Carry it to every vendor meeting

4. Do not leave things to the last minute and allow enough time on the wedding day - some things will take a little longer. Don’t rush!

5. Smile, breathe, relax on your big day. Enjoy it!

Oh, can I add No.6. Hire a Wedding Planner!

Thanks Cathrin, we're already looking forward to hearing more from you next month!
