Tips for winter weddings - Tip 7 of 8

TIP 7

For December weddings, bear in mind that your venue may already be decorated for Christmas. This could save you money but it is definitely worth asking what their colour scheme is so that you can work with, not against, it!

And, if you really don't like their colours, don't be afraid to ask them if they'll let you make a few changes.

Tips for winter weddings - Tip 4 of 8

Monday, 16 November 2009

TIP 4

If you're having a civil ceremony and reception in the same place don't let the fact that it's winter restrict your choice of outfit. You won't have to worry about cold shoulders in a strapless dress if you're near a roaring log fire.

Tips for winter weddings - Tip 2 of 8

Saturday, 14 November 2009

TIP 2

Always use seasonal flowers wherever possible to keep costs down. Or, don't use flowers at all, especially if you're getting married between Christmas and New Year when the flower markets are closed. Instead think candles, fairy lights and winter greenery - simple and visually stunning.

Tips for winter weddings - Tip 1 of 8

Friday, 13 November 2009

Last month we published a series of tips to help you ensure you chose the right bridesmaids and got the best from them. This month we've compiled our top 8 tips for ensuring that your winter wedding is fabulous and causes you as little stress as possible.

Enjoy a week of wonderful winter wedding witterings!

TIP 1

The only thing you can't plan is the weather and at this time of year you have to expect the worst. You must have a workable 'Plan B' that won't feel like too much of a compromise and remember, if your expectations are low and you end up with a beautifully clear, sunny winter's day it will only add to your enjoyment and make you feel even more special!

Marquee weddings in winter

Friday, 16 October 2009

As marquees become more and more sophisticated (not to mention expensive!) there are fewer reasons to think of them as exclusively for sunny summer days.

Some of our favourite weddings have been inside toasty marquees in the depths of winter and there are a few things we have learnt along the way that we thought we should share with you now. If it means that one person has one less sleepless night as a result of reading this then we'll be very happy!

TIP 1 - Make sure someone other than the couple getting married know how to use the heaters in the marquee and is prepared to take responsibility for them. It's a good job for an usher but they will need to be alert as the heaters can take a little while to warm up so they might have to go on earlier than you think!

TIP 2 - Why not buy up cheap 'pashmina' scarves in an array of colours and either use them as favours (wrapping them around the backs of the chairs will look fab AND keep the ladies warm!) or leave them near the entrance to the marquee in a big wicker basket with a note inviting guests to help themselves.

TIP 3 - Speak to your marquee company about providing - and laying - rush matting walkways outside the marquee. Not only will it save peoples shoes from the mud but it may end up saving you money as there will be less likelihood of damage to the marquee flooring.

Until next time,

A fabulous wedding at a stunning venue

Monday, 20 July 2009

It's no secret that we absolutely love our work - and we know how lucky we are to be able to say this. Every once in a while we have the privilege of working with a couple whose wedding plans literally take our breath away.

This is never about budget but is always about a couple who have prioritised early, chosen their suppliers carefully and understand that their best laid plans may go to waste without asking someone they trust, in this case Magic Dust, to ensure that everything goes to plan in the run up to, and on the wedding day itself.

Kenton & Jen's wedding this weekend was just such a celebration and has inspired me to devote a daily blog this week to tell you about some of the fabulous suppliers I had the pleasure of working with on Saturday. Do make a date with this blog tomorrow to read about a wonderful photographer, on Wednesday I'll be raving about cheese, Thursday a surprise planned by the bride and groom is made easy by an understanding, flexible supplier and on Friday I'll be summing up the things that Kenton & Jen did that made their day, in fact their entire wedding weekend, a truly wonderful celebration.

Today though, it's all about the venue. You know how important it is to choose the right venue and I've spoken in the past about the hard work that must go into finding it. The reward for taking your time and getting it right is that every other decision becomes easier as a result. Kenton & Jen chose Hipping Hall, a beautiful 17th century house nestled between the Yorkshire Dales & the Lake District near Kirkby Lonsdale.

Better known as a fantastic 'restaurant with rooms', the owners of Hipping Hall take bookings for a small number of weddings during the year. First and foremost this is an award-winning restaurant with spectacularly appointed rooms and is most definitely not a 'conveyor-belt style' wedding venue.

Long may this continue as it means there is flexibility for couples planning a small-ish celebration - usually less than 40 people - with Andrew Wildsmith, Hipping Hall's owner, taking personal responsibility for the management of the event. Exclusive use means a relaxed, informal atmosphere more like a very stylish house party than a traditional wedding venue and the opportunity to make a weekend of it.

In our experience it's the staff that can make or break otherwise fantastic venues and, at Hipping Hal, it's clear that every single member of staff not only thoroughly enjoys working there but is passionate about ensuring that guests have a wonderful experience. Without exception, everyone was flexible, approachable, friendly and focused on Kenton & Jen and their guests. I'd like to personally thank Andrew, Nicola, David & Jess for making my job thoroughly enjoyable and without a hint of stress, and to the wonderful people who worked so hard in the kitchen to produce delicious food on a seemingly never-ending basis. You have no idea just how rare your talents and excellent customer service are!

Before I started writing this post I was torn between telling you all about Hipping Hall and wanting to keep it a secret! I hope you've enjoyed reading about this gem of a venue and, if you get the chance, do visit for a meal, a weekend break or to discuss your wedding plans. I know you won't be disappointed!

Until tomorrow and a very special photographer,

A gem of a wedding venue & some stunning dresses...

Saturday, 18 April 2009

Wow, wedding season really is in full swing now - Bank Holidays? What Bank Holidays? We've had a great week, from fun-filled 'Girls Night In' wedding planning sessions, to venue searches and decoration proposals, interspersed with some wonderful one-to-ones with our Mentoring Programme members.

Not only that, we've also uncovered a couple of real gems that I just have to share with you. If knowing about either of these suppliers makes just one couple stress a little bit less during their wedding planning, then I'll be happy!

If you're looking for a special place to get married and hold your reception in a spectacular part of Northern Ireland, or simply want somewhere beautiful to stop for wedding photos after a church ceremony, look no further. Not only is Glendarragh House completely stunning, it's only 5 minutes from the City of Derry and, better still, it's owned and run by a very dear friend of a friend who doesn't give out recommendations easily. I know the glowing report I've had is thoroughly deserved and I urge you to contact them for one of their beautiful brochures which perfectly showcases this hidden gem.

If hunting for the perfect wedding dress is getting you down or you simply want to try on a few more before making your decision, check out Tickled Pink. Based in Maidenhead and with a private showroom that is open by appointment only, Debbie offers a very personal and attentive service. At the moment she has some wedding dresses in stock that are ridiculously affordable, and they're not all on her website so do feel free to call if you're looking for something in particular or just want a chat with someone who's friendly, professional and passionate about what she does.

We're excited about running another Wedding Planners Master Class Course tomorrow in London and meeting 7 more people who are considering a new career as wedding planners. If you're interested in finding out more about this fabulous career, what it takes to be successful and how to avoid the pitfalls, and want to do all this in a single, information-packed day, get in touch and we'll happily talk to you about the dates we have available over the next few months. What's more, you won't have to spend a fortune to gain the inspiration and motivation that has driven many of our Master Class graduates to take their wedding planning dreams to the next level - you could be next!

Until next week, happy planning!

From On The Day wedding coordination to a first planning session in one weekend

Monday, 13 April 2009

Way back in September 2007 I first spoke with Diana - she was the very excited winner of a competition we ran with Grazia magazine and Kirsten Goss jewellery!

Eighteen months, numerous emails, meetings & telephone calls later, I pulled up in front of Clearwell Castle on Saturday, thrilled to be stepping out into glorious sunshine. Thanks to an incredibly organised bride and an On The Day wedding coordinator service that is second to none, I was confident that everyone at the wedding would need to worry about nothing except having a wonderful time.

I had very comfortable shoes on (still pretty ones though!) and was more than prepared for anything that might need a quick response. Admittedly, most of our hard work had been done in the weeks leading up to the wedding. Contacting every supplier involved in the wedding to double-check, then triple-check, details of the bookings, ensure that everybody knew exactly what was expected of them and when, and then deal with the few last-minute issues that arose. All the while keeping Diana in the loop so that she could truly relax and enjoy the last few days of being engaged, knowing that someone who plans and co-ordinates weddings for a living, was in control of everything.

So, it was relatively easy to appear relaxed and happy during the wedding. After all, what newly-married couple wants to be surrounded by fussy, frantic people when they can instead chat with someone they've grown close to over a number of months and who they trust to ensure that they have the day they have meticulously planned, not just the one that is easiest for their suppliers to provide?

We did had a couple of last minute 'issues' and this is what we thrive on - spotting potential problems early enough to make them disappear without ever troubling the bride and groom, or any of their guests. My reward on Saturday was seeing a couple who didn't stop smiling and who took time out of their day to come and thank me for all my help, before I slipped away. When bridesmaids and parents of the happy couple also sought me out to thank me, I was the one smiling like a Cheshire cat and I drove home buzzing with happiness. See, it really is the best job in the world!

It may be Easter weekend, and believe me I did manage to eat the obligatory truck-load of chocolate yesterday, but later today I'm off to North London to meet a newly-engaged couple who have booked one of our very popular 'Girls Night In' wedding planner sessions.

This is the opposite end of the wedding planning timeline to 'On The Day Co-ordination' and I am looking forward to showing Catherine & Ronan how to approach their wedding planning in an organised, methodical way in order to ensure they suffer as little pre-wedding stress as possible, and manage to plan a day that reflects their personalities without emptying their bank account.

If you would like to talk to me about how we can kick-start your wedding plans and help you enjoy the planning of your wedding, please get in touch. We'll happily chat to you, with no obligations, about our services and if we leave you feeling confident and capable of planning the day of your dreams (not anyone else's), that is our reward!

Until next week,

Some welcome sunshine and a honeymoon tip

Sunday, 11 January 2009

You don't need me to tell you that it's really cold outside and, if you're anything like me, you're taking the term 'layering' to a whole new level at the moment.

So, let's talk beaches, sunshine and blue skies...

We took some time out recently to relax and enjoy Christmas with our family and friends, before jetting off to Cape Town to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the New Year in the sun! I find it impossible to completely switch off from wedding planning (that's what happens when you love your job!) and have returned inspired and with a fantastic new supplier to share with you.

Derwent House is a boutique hotel in Cape Town, perfectly positioned for the beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton as well as the bars and restaurants of Kloof Street. Take a look at the reviews of Derwent House on Trip Advisor to see what other people think too!

It felt as though we were staying with friends who were happy to let us do our own thing but were always on hand with a restaurant recommendation, advice on day trips, car hire and the like. Carol & Jo genuinely care about their guests having a great time and they have earned every single one of their fans.

So, if you are thinking about planning your honeymoon, or want to inspire the person who is planning your honeymoon, drop Cape Town and Derwent House into the conversation. It's the perfect destination for a sunny honeymoon between November and March, with nearly 11 hours of sunshine a day. The fact that there's only 2 hours time difference from the UK means you won't have to worry about jet lag spoiling your trip, and there is so much to do in and around the city that boredom just isn't an option.

Why not go one step further and look into getting married in Cape Town! There are no residency requirements and you can actually get married on the beach - Llandudno beach just south of Cape Town is a favourite spot for wedding ceremonies. There's more information about getting married in South Africa here.

And, if you do go, make sure to say hi to Carol & Jo from me. On second thoughts, you'd better check the sunny spot by the pool as there's every chance I'll be sat there again some day!

We're taking bookings for 'On The Day' wedding co-ordination right through 2009 and 2010 so, if you'd like to find out if we're free on your wedding date so you can relax and enjoy every second of your day and the run-up to it, or you would like to book a place on one of our 2009 Wedding Planner Master Class courses or you simply have a wedding planning question that's keeping you awake at night, please get in touch - we're here to help!

Until next week,

Shopping for boots is just like wedding planning and a fantastic place for a grown-up hen night...

Saturday, 27 September 2008

I really do love my job which is why I often find myself thinking about it in the strangest places!

Recently, on a flying visit to Moscow (long story!) I decided to forego more sightseeing in favour of a spot of retail therapy. I needed (well, it was more of a want if I'm being totally honest) a new pair of boots and, in a city where temperatures stay well below freezing for at least 4 months of the year, I knew I'd find lots and lots of boots to choose from.

I wasn't wrong and, having worked out my priorities for this must-have pair of boots (colour, style, budget), I walked into a store where I was bombarded with a choice of over 500 pairs of boots! I literally stopped in my tracks and marvelled at the sight but, just 10 minutes later, I walked out with the loveliest pair - bang on budget and in exactly the style and colour I was looking for.

What's this got to do with wedding planning you might be thinking? Well, the first thing we counsel couples to do when they're starting to plan their wedding is to agree their priorities. My shopping trip for boots proves just how important this is. If I hadn't thought about my priorities before walking into that shop I would have spent at least an hour wandering from one shelf of boots to another, getting increasingly frustrated and would likely have ended up spending a small fortune on 3 pairs of boots that I didn't really want, much less like.

Instead, 10 minutes and the perfect pair of boots later, I emerged unstressed and ready to move on to the next thing on my 'To Do' list, all because I knew what I was looking before before I started looking.

So, agree your priorities before you even think about starting to plan your wedding and you will, I guarantee, save yourself time, stress and money and, most importantly, you'll end up with what you want rather than what you grab just to get out of the store!

Last Sunday I was lucky enough to visit Eckington Manor Cookery School near Pershore. As well as fantastic cookery classes - you should have tasted my pumpkin soup - there is a wonderful farm house, Lower End Farm, that has been restored to its former glory and is now a stunning B&B.

Judy, the owner and visionary of this fabulous place, gave me a guided tour of Lower End Farm and I think it is one of the most beautiful, inviting places I have ever seen. Gorgeous Fired Earth bathrooms, bedrooms with stunning hand-painted silk wallpaper, the most amazing antler chandeliers and access to a wonderful chef who spent 15 years at Rick Stein's and will happily whip up a feast for guests - it doesn't get much better than that.

Recently a bride's mother rented out the entire farmhouse and, along with the bride and her bridesmaids, stayed there the night before the wedding. Whilst not everyone will be getting married close enough to Eckington to make this feasible, it's definitely worth considering for a grown-up hen night or even a pre-wedding get-away with the man, or woman, of your dreams!

If you'd like to talk to me about organising a 'Girls Night In' wedding planning session, check if we're free on your wedding date for 'On The Day' wedding co-ordination or just need an answer to a question that's keeping you awake at night, please get in touch!

A hidden gem of a venue, a great photgrapher & a great pre-wedding getaway

Friday, 19 September 2008

This week I was lucky enough to be invited to a 'Mad Hatter's Tea Party' at The Goring Hotel in central London. A stone's throw from Victoria station - and Buckingham Palace - this hotel completely won me over. I certainly wasn't expecting such a beautiful, quiet garden in the heart of London and when I found out that some of the rooms in the hotel have balconies that look out over this garden... well I was ready to move in!

Perfect for a stylish, intimate wedding celebration in central London this hotel definitely has the 'wow' factor! If the service levels are half as good as the incredibly helpful concierge and doormen were, then The Goring will not disappoint.

Why not try taking tea here next time you're in London so you can see for yourself what a gem this hotel is? You might even spot me in the corner!

I love it when someone I trust tells me about a fantastic wedding supplier. So, after a very good friend of mine told me about the photographer Mark Miller, from a wedding they'd recently attended, I knew I'd found another star! His website showcases his work beautifully but also captures his personality - so important when you're trying to find the right person to capture your wedding day on film.

This man knows how important it is to keep the couples he works with front of mind at all times - another reason why we're big fans! He surprised this particular bride & groom with an enlarged image from their pre-wedding shoot that he set up at their wedding reception. Such a lovely, thoughtful gift and one of those 'money can't buy' moments that this couple will never forget.

For a couple of days last week we experienced the most fantastic place to head to for complete relaxation, and I thought I'd share it with you. In the middle of rural France, a little over an hour's drive from Limoges airport, is Chez Jallot - better known as the burnt out manor house on Grand Designs that a British couple, Doug & Deni, transformed into a wonderful home.

So, if you need to escape from your wedding planning for a few days, I can't recommend this 'chambre d'hote' highly enough. The most strenuous activity is letting Yogi, the resident dog, take you for a walk through the countryside every morning! The perfect place to forget about wedding planning and remember why you're getting married.

If you'd like to talk to me about organising a 'Girls Night In' wedding planning session, check if we're free on your wedding date for 'On The Day' wedding co-ordination or just need an answer to a question that's keeping you awake at night, please get in touch!

On You Day & your venue

Monday, 1 September 2008

It's actually Monday already but I make no apologies for being late with this blog! This is the first chance I've had to put fingers to keyboard since working at Katherine & Stephen's stunning wedding at St Paul's Cathedral and The Caledonian Club in Belgravia, London on Saturday.

The weather was gorgeous (as I type this the rain is pouring down so it only highlights how lucky we were on Saturday!), and thanks to a meticulously organised bride and magicdust's 'On The Day' co-ordination, all went well.

On Friday, I spoke to Katherine a few times and was struck, once again, by the value of the On The Day co-ordination. We don't book weddings on consecutive days so that we're fresh and full of energy to work on your wedding day and also (and perhaps more importantly) so that on the day before your wedding you have a hotline to someone calm, experienced and knowledgeable about every aspect of your day. There's nothing like a chat with someone like that (me!) to calm any last minute nerves and allay any fears. It made my day to know that Katherine could relax and enjoy herself and look forward to Saturday.

Lots of venues have 'wedding co-ordinators' who will claim to be responsible for the running of the day. It's likely that you will spend a lot of time, energy and patience dealing with them in the run up to your wedding day. What many of them won't guarantee though is that they'll actually be there on your wedding day!

I find it incredible that someone can be the sole contact for a couple at their venue, responsible for interpreting their wishes, and knowing what they don't want, but then effectively won't finish the job by relinquishing that responsibility when it matters the most.

If ever anyone questions the point of employing a wedding planner for 'On The Day' co-ordination when a venue has a wedding co-ordinator, just ask if they'll be definitely be working on your wedding day... if they're not there you can bet that you'll be bombarded with questions from staff who haven't been briefed properly, or worse still, have to watch as your best-laid plans are ignored completely in favour of 'the way it's always done'.

If you'd like to talk to me about organising a 'Girls Night In' wedding planning session, check if we're free on your wedding date for 'On The Day' wedding co-ordination or just need an answer to a question that's keeping you awake at night, please get in touch!

A refreshing approach to venue-hunting, WrapIt's demise & from small acorns...

Saturday, 9 August 2008

I was talking to someone this week about how they found their wedding venue and I just had to share it with you. It's an enormously important decision, one that will not only set the tone and atmosphere for your whole celebration, but one that's likely to eat up a significant chunk of your already stretched budget.

So, how about investigating charity-owned venues? It's a win-win because lots of charities own spectacular buildings so you won't have to compromise on style or charm but you will have the satisfaction of knowing that the money you're paying is going to a good cause. Thanks for this tip, Lindsay, it's exactly the sort of story we love hearing at Magic Dust!

My heart goes out to all the couples currently affected by the news this week that WrapIt have gone into liquidation. In my humble opinion, this is yet another example of what happens when companies in the wedding industry get greedy and forget about the people they should be focusing on - couples getting married.

We discuss this terrible situation, with tips and advice for affected couples as well as ideas for alternative gift lists, in more detail in Magic Dust's current newsletter which you can subscribe to by clicking here (we'll send you this current issue straight away).

I'm not a fan of observing traditions on your wedding day because you think you have to, but you've probably guessed that by now! Favours tend to be top of my list of unnecessary expenditure unless you really want them - I've seen too many bags of sugared almonds left on tables at the end of weddings to think they're a must.

So, it's unusual for an idea for a wedding favour to make it into The Blog... Wedding Tree Favours deserves a mention. Helpfully presented in blister packs that make it easy for guests to transport them home, each tree comes with it's own certificate of provenance and is not only environmentally friendly but a lovely way of ensuring that your wedding day is remembered by generations to come.

There's something very romantic about thinking that your great grandchildren could be building treehouses in an oak that was planted in celebration of your wedding. And if any do get left behind at the end of the night, take them home and plant your own orchard!

I'm going to end this blog with another heart-warming tale. According to research in a national newspaper this week, married women's favourite pastime is going out for dinner with their husband. It's good to know that in this materialistic age, handbags, shoes, expensive cars, holidays and houses still can't beat a good old chat over a plate of food with the love of your life.

And on that note, I'm off to meet Mr Willson at our favourite restaurant... If you'd like to talk to me about how we might be able to help you, check if we're free on your wedding date for 'On The Day' wedding co-ordination or to help you kick start your wedding plans with a 'Girls Night In' planning session please get in touch!

A fantastic boutique, the perfect hideaway and lots of planning

Saturday, 19 July 2008

It's been a busy week of 'On The Day' wedding coordination preparations which has included visits to venues, numerous conversations with suppliers and updates for the couples we're working with over the summer months.

I often have brides warn me that when they've told some of their suppliers that they're using a wedding planner, there's been a sharp intake of breath! It seems that lots of venues, caterers, florists and photographers have had less than positive experiences of working with a wedding planner.

I'm delighted to say that we've never had anything but praise from the suppliers we've worked with at every wedding we've been involved in, even the ones who were sceptical before we met. I actually relish the opportunity to change their perception of wedding planners by being different and making the experience of working with Magic Dust enjoyable for everyone involved.

Not all wedding planners are bossy and officious - some of us really do have our client's interests at heart and know that a smile and a friendly approach will get things done quickly, properly and with a minimum of stress!

I discovered a wonderful boutique in the gorgeous village of Broadway, in the Cotswolds, a few weeks ago and I just have to share it with you. You won't find your wedding dress there but you will find at least one thing you'll just have to have for your honeymoon!

Equally, it's the sort of boutique where service still counts for something and an experience that any 'mother of the bride' or wedding guest of any age would enjoy. Pop in and see Sue and her daughter, who run Parkinson's if you're in the area or check out their online store. Just so you know, I came away with a dress that has since been complimented more than any other I've ever worn (except for a certain ivory silk one of course...)

And finally, you'll have heard me talk about celebrating your one month wedding anniversary in style on more than one occasion but now I'm going to tell you about the perfect place to head for to do just that!

Run by a wonderful couple who are based in London but have extensive knowledge of this part of Ireland, The Fuschsias is a stunning hideaway that has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment with the most fantastic attention to detail (and you know I'm a big fan of that!).

Perfect for a romantic long weekend full of coastal walks and pub lunches or even for a small group of friends to hang out in style for a few days, I suggest you book in now before I beat you to it!

Until next week,

A fabulous wedding, a hidden gem of a venue & wise words from Carrie Bradshaw

Saturday, 31 May 2008

Well, I am delighted to tell you that last week's tipi wedding was a fantastic day from start to finish. After days of uncertainty regarding the weather, Saturday turned out beautifully - warm and sunny with a refreshing breeze so the brollies stayed in the car and the sunscreen came out instead!

The bride & groom looked happy and relaxed, surrounded by family and friends, and enjoying every single minute of their day. They didn't need to know or worry about the things we had dealt with in the morning... one of the major suppliers getting stuck in traffic and arriving over an hour late, the table decorations wilting in the heat and needing to be rearranged, finding the choir somewhere private to practice (it was an outdoor wedding!) and chasing a couple of angry geese out of the tipi!

I know how hard it is to find the right venue, I speak to lots of couples who are struggling with this decision, so I have to tell you about Duncton Mill. Apart from being the most stunning setting - on the edge of the South Downs near Petworth - the owners, Caroline & Martin are absolutely wonderful. Really helpful both in the run up to the wedding day and on the day itself - if I had a choice I'd work with them every week! What's really fantastic is that they don't dictate to couples or insist that they use their suppliers so, within reason, you can plan to have the wedding you want to have, in an amazing place.

I treated myself to a trip to the cinema on Wednesday to watch "Sex & The City" because I just couldn't wait until next week when I'm going with my girlfriends! Something Carrie said made so much sense to me and I promise it won't spoil the film if you haven't seen it yet, so read on!

She said that we're often so busy worrying about what we should do, or be, that, "We forget to write our own rules". I couldn't agree more, especially when it comes to planning your wedding. Remember, it's your wedding, nobody else's so don't forget to be true to yourselves and have the celebration you want, not the one you might be feeling pressured into having by other people...

If you want to talk to someone who'll help you plan the wedding you want to have without taking over or being bossy, give me a call or drop a wedding planner an email! We do still have a few dates available for 'On The Day' wedding coordination this summer and the peace of mind this buys you is priceless so why not find out if we're free on your wedding day?

Have a lovely weekend and, if you're going to see "Sex & The City" take some tissues, wear fabulous shoes and stop off somewhere for a Cosmopolitan with your girlfriends!

Until next week,

Tammy Willson wedding planner and coordinator

Fabulous fragrances, a stylish treat & a very happy couple

Saturday, 24 May 2008

It's been a funny old week weather-wise and whilst the one thing you can't plan for is the weather, you can plan to be prepared. So we'll be taking umbrellas and sunscreen in our 'Emergency Kit' tomorrow to ensure we're ready for anything!

I've got a couple of things I wanted to share with you this week that sit firmly in the 'stylish, pampering, me-time' camp! Choosing a fragrance to wear on your wedding day should be fun so don't think a trip to your local department store on a Saturday afternoon is your only option. If you know where to look you can find a scent that nobody else you know wears - and that you can then use on special occasions to remind you of your wedding day. So check out Les Senteurs, a fantastic specialist perfumery in London's Belgravia, with a great mail order service too. The staff will take time to help you choose a few samples to take away if you visit the store and, online, you can order samples to be sent to you. I love 'Daim Blond' by Serge Lutens - great name and it smells fabulous too!

You might also like to try Jo Malone as her fragrance-layering technique means you can create a unique scent and complement it with room candles, bath oils and body lotions too. There are a number of stores in London and across the country and counters in Selfridges and Harvey Nichols stores too - plus a good online shop.

If you're going to be in London at any point during your wedding planning - perhaps trying on dresses in the capital or just indulging in a spot of retail therapy, book 'Pret A Portea' at The Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge A gorgeous treat for you, a lovely gift for bridesmaids or Mums, this afternoon tea is a favourite amongst London's fashionistas so keep your eyes peeled - you'll be in good company. Make sure you book though as it's very popular!

There's nothing quite like a happy bride & groom to put a smile on my face so you can imagine how delighted I was to get a thank you card this week from a couple I worked with in March. I managed to track down a bag full of their wedding presents and cards that went missing at the hotel where they spent their wedding night - it took nearly 4 weeks and untold phone calls but we got there in the end! The comment in their card says it all and made my day, "You were fab on the day - but it was the before & after that was just so over and beyond the call of duty."

If you'd like to talk to a wedding planner about how we might be able to help you, check if we're free on your wedding date for 'On The Day wedding coordination' or you'd like me to help you kick start your wedding plans with a 'Girls Night In' wedding planning session, please get in touch!

Until next week,

Venues...

Wednesday, 16 January 2008

Finding a venue is arguably the toughest decision to make when planning your wedding. It is no surprise to me that a large number of the couples we work with struggle to find somewhere that is right for them and so approach us for help.

Today I spent some time helping one couple with their search. Disheartened after a fruitless weekend travelling around, visiting prospective venues, they called me to ask for advice. The good news was that even though they didn't find the right venue last weekend, they did work out exactly what they will not compromise on and what they are happy to live without. By getting their priorities straight they really have made their lives easier and, it's much quicker (and therefore cheaper!) for me to get involved and help them.

I use my contacts and experience, as well as the time I have to concentrate on this task and nothing else, and come up with a list of venues that fit the couples brief and which they can decide to visit or approach for more information, knowing that the ground work has been done.

Again, it's what we do best at Magic Dust - take the stress out of wedding planning by doing exactly what each individual couple asks us to do, when they ask us to do it.
